Batwoman!

Late last night hubby and I sat watching TV, the log burner roaring. We may have gone early on the log burner in the sitting room but it's new and gorgeous and the sitting room is pretty parky without some added heat - even in summer!

Suddenly I heard a squeaking noise and was off my seat, quick as blink, clearly a cat had brought a live present through the cat flap.

I entered the dark kitchen at speed and Tabby must have realised that I was none too pleased with his offering. He and his prize flapped back out the way they came in. I didn't recognise the squeal of the creature he'd caught and as it was still very much alive, so I grabbed the torch and lashed out into the walled garden.

Tabby, as I've mentioned before, is more dog than cat.

'Leave it' I said and reluctantly, leave it, he did.

It was a tiny bat, half the size of a golf ball. As I picked it up it bit me several times without piercing the skin, until it settled on my hand. (I'm pretty sure I don't have rabies this morning - but I'll let you know.) I checked its wings and body. It seemed unscathed.

I put it on the wall and eventually it flew off. Cute. I just can't imagine how Tabby caught it, although I do watch him patiently sitting at the pond, a favourite swooping area of the bats. Must have been one hell of a leap to catch the bat and avoid falling into the murky water!

  3. I woke up in the night once to a rustling noise. I woke my boyfriend up and we turned on the lights to see what it was. First it looked like a small brown leaf to our half asleep eyes. Then it opened its wings and a tiny little bat flew up. Well, the boyfriend was terrified! He'd heard that bats can get caught up in your hair, and so put a pair of pants on his head - yes really. And then said 'shall we call someone - the Police'! Yes, really to that too! Well, after we ran about for 5 minutes and the bat must have been terrified, I opened all the doors and windows in the flat and the little bat found its way out. Ahh.
As you can imagine, the boyfriend is not now the Huzz!!!
And what an obiedient cat Tabby is. Glad to hear your little bat wasn't Tabby's dinner.

  4. And I was starting to believe my mother was a visionary, after her comment of a couple of years ago as we watched her cat leap up onto the fence, and hopelessly stumble right off it again.....'Modern cats!'

Sounds like you have a ninja cool cat.

  6. There is a cat on my property that has been perching in a lilac tree next to a bird feeder dangling nearby. I was walking around coffee in hand and saw this feline balancing on a limb trying to have a go at the birds! It was hilarious!

The Cat: I'm trying to work here buddy take a walk!

As he tumbled to the ground!
