The new cunning plan....

.....is our specially purchased, rinky-dinky electric fence! I touched it accidentally....it REALLY works. We'll turn it off during the day, so they can still roam. They will still be vulnerable while foxy-loxy has cubs, but I like the idea that they are free range, having been in the battery farms since birth.

Last night all girls + 1 rooster were put to bed and fence turned on. This morning we can report zero deaths. Phew!

....still gittin' me a gun....

I'm loving what your doing with the chickens! just wait until you have those eggs you will wonder why you purchased store bought all these years, and just a factoid..did you know that when you buy eggs from the grocer in most cases they had been laid up to 4-6 weeks prior! good on you with the chicken coop!

I think you should have a name contest for that Rooster..
and by the way you check out the planet Venus in the western sky I'm sure you have a spectacular view of the stars from the Larches!
Its the brightest star in the western sky that does not twinkle and sits just above the horizon after dusk perhaps the Children will get a kick out of that! or perhaps not..

  3. Natural Selection: You are quite right about the taste of our eggs v's shop bought. We've had eggs from the girls since October and they are outstanding. We feed a mixture of layers pellets, mixed corn and kitchen titbits. The yolks are dayglo orange! ....so good, in fact, that I am now supplying my eggs to a published food writer. .....

Gotta go, off ter oil my gun....

There are no street lights near our land so the dark sky view is amazing. Will look for Venus. Thanks.

TheMadHouse: I'm thick me! Just held onto the bloody wire again while trying to turn the power off!! Doh! Upside is, I'm awake now...

  6. Good move. I don't know what a fox sounds like, but if you hear any high-pitched squeals in the night...
